Student of the French painter Léon Cogniet. Worked in Paris in the 1860's for several important French newspapers. He moved to London in 1869, where he became a full-time illustrator for the weekly magazine Graphic.

Bird's eye view of the city of Kampen, seen from the other side of the river IJssel. The church tower in line with the bridge belongs to the Broederkerk, a Dutch Reformed church, which was once part of a monastery dating from the 15th century. The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk or Buitenkerk rises up on the right.
