COLLECTION
CURRENCY

*
Collected in the '40 - '50's in Congo and Ethiopia.
Of course, the objects are much older: they date from the 18th and 19th century or earlier.

Ethnographic currency
exist in various designs and may be manufactured from
shells, metals, textiles, glass and stone *.
The probably most well known "currency" is the bead.
(see also our collection African necklaces)

* on the rare stone currency is unfortunately little or no literature available

*st
*

The most common form of metal currency in West Africa was the "manilla":
a rod with flared ends and bent into a bracelet form.

"Tshipita" WAIST CHAIN
very rare: small discs made of celluloid in different sizes

This kind of chains were originally used for concealing rather then for decorative purposes. Young girls wore them wrapped around their waists and hips, thus improving femine curves which did not yet exist.
The chains are usually made of brass, or shells or similar.
This piece is very rare because of the use of celluloid.
