Gandeks were generally used by sheperds and fisherman for carrying food, sirih (betelnut) or fish. When opened two layers of woven bamboo is found. This makes the basket not only very sturdy, but it is also handy to put money in between these two layers. A gandek could also be used for food storage in the kitchen, such as potatoes, rice or onions.
